Salmon
Fishing FREE to Residents from 15th March to 15th June
Centrally
located on what for many years has been regarded as one of the
finest Salmon fishing rivers in the country and famous the quality
of its "Springers" the fishery is well known for providing
good sport throughout the year.
Lying roughly mid-way along the length of the river The Moccas
Fishery offers a superb variety of characteristics from gravel
beds, with streamy runs and deep pots, down to slower moving
water over red bedrock, underwater ledges and dark pools, where
a mighty Wye Salmon may lie in wait !
The
season opens on the 4th March when there are usually fresh run
fish to be found in the pools at Moccas, each season can see recording
our first fish during opening week and on several occasions the
first fish off the river.
It
is generally accepted that the early season sport is based on
the superb quality of the fish, from 15 to 20 pounds and the
fishery has a history of producing those once in a life-time
30 to 45 pounders. As we move on into the late spring, early
summer and autumn, the main runs of grilse and salmon can now
be found right through the river and these tend to be in the
5 to 15 pound range.
The methods of fishing allowed during the season are Fly and Spinning until the 31st August with Fly only from 1st September to the end of the season on the 17th October.
The use of worms, shrimps and prawns is prohibited all season and all Salmon must be released before the 16th June and after the 31st August.
The beats are fished on a daily rotation basis
giving everyone an equal variey of sport. Most beats offer
excellent fly and spinning water and where necessary easy wading
and riverside parking. After a successful day on the river
we can arrange for your catch to be prepared as you like, cleaned,
frozen or smoked. A rod room and drying facilities are also
available as is an assortment of tackle.
The proprietor and
ghillies are always available to share their knowledge of the water
and there is always plenty
of free advice in "The Leapers Bar " each evening.
A
telephone call, fax or letter to me is all that is needed to arrange
your fishing break We are easily accessible from most major centres
and motorways.
