Activities

The Red Lion Hotel is known as one of the leading destinations in the Heart of England for those who enjoy an outdoor‑focused break.
Bredwardine sits roughly halfway along the River Wye as it winds through some of the most beautiful and still‑unspoilt countryside in England. Despite being within easy reach of major population centres in the Midlands and South Wales — with excellent road and rail links — it remains a peaceful, largely forgotten oasis in an otherwise busy world.
Nearby points of interest include Kilvert Country, the Wye Valley Walk, the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons, Offa’s Dyke, the Malvern Hills and the Welsh Borders.

Walking

The Red Lion is perfectly placed for exploring some of the finest and most varied walking country in the region — from the gentle, rolling hills of the Welsh Borders to the heather‑clad moorlands of the Black Mountains and Malvern Hills, and on to the more demanding high tops of the Brecon Beacons. This is a landscape rich in history and folklore, with local walks leading up onto the surrounding hills where you can look down on the winding River Wye or take in sweeping views across as many as five counties.
The hotel offers the character and atmosphere of a 17th‑century inn, combined with the comfort and convenience expected of a modern hotel. After a day on the trails, you can return to warm, comfortable en‑suite rooms and good food. Storage and drying facilities are available for your gear, and local information, maps and guides can be easily sourced. If you’re staying with us as part of a longer walking route, we can also help arrange transport for your heavier packs to your next stop — just get in touch to enquire.

Golfing

The Red Lion is perfectly placed for a golfing break, with the added appeal of being able to play a different course each day of your stay. While we don’t have a course of our own, our location puts you within easy reach of a wide selection of excellent options throughout the Wye Valley and surrounding area.
Three courses are just a short drive away: The Herefordshire Golf Club at Wormsley, an attractive and gently undulating course; Kington Golf Club, the highest course in England and Wales, offering spectacular views across Herefordshire and into Wales; and Burghill Valley Golf Club, set among the county’s famous apple orchards. A further ten or so courses lie within comfortable travelling distance — a mix of familiar favourites and new challenges to test your game.
We hope you’ll agree that the variety and choice more than compensate for not having our own course. You’re welcome to make your own arrangements directly with the clubs, giving you complete flexibility, or you can take advantage of our inclusive packages and let us handle the details. Whichever you prefer, we’re always happy to help with planning your stay.

Cycling

Herefordshire offers a wonderful selection of cycling routes, taking in the magnificent cathedral city of Hereford, a host of charming villages and the beautiful Wye Valley. We’re pleased to welcome cycling groups of all sizes — whether you’re stopping in for refreshments, a meal or an overnight stay. For larger groups, we recommend calling ahead to pre‑order food so everything is ready when you arrive.

Canoeing

The River Wye is a wonderful place to explore by canoe, offering peaceful scenery and the chance to spot wildlife such as herons, kingfishers, peregrines and even otters. Canoes can be hired from several operators in and around Glasbury and Hay‑on‑Wye for anything from a short paddle to a full‑day or multi‑day trip. From either starting point, you can drift downstream to Bredwardine, where the hire company will meet you to collect both you and your canoe.
