Activities

The Red Lion Hotel is recognised as one of the top destinations in the Heart of England for those who enjoy an outdoor-focused break.

Bredwardine lies roughly halfway along the River Wye as it meanders through some of the most beautiful and still-unspoilt countryside in England. Despite being within easy reach of major population centres in the Midlands and South Wales — with excellent road and rail links — it remains a peaceful, largely forgotten oasis in an otherwise busy world.

Nearby points of interest include Kilvert Country, the Wye Valley Walk, the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons, Offa’s Dyke, the Malvern Hills, and the Welsh Borders.

Walking

The Red Lion is the perfect base for exploring the stunning walking landscapes of the Welsh Borders, the Black Mountains, the Malvern Hills, and the Brecon Beacons. Enjoy panoramic views of the River Wye as you wander through this region rich in history and folklore.

Our charming 17th-century inn offers modern comforts, cosy en-suite rooms, and delicious meals to help you unwind after a day of adventure. We provide excellent storage and drying facilities for your gear and can assist with transportation for your heavier packs.

Golfing

The Red Lion is the ideal spot for your next golfing getaway! Enjoy a different course every day during your stay, with exceptional options in the beautiful Wye Valley and beyond.

Just a short drive away are three fantastic courses: The Herefordshire Golf Club at Wormsley, Kington Golf Club—England and Wales' highest course, and Burghill Valley Golf Club, among apple orchards. Additionally, there are about ten more nearby courses offering both favourites and new challenges.

You can book directly with the clubs for flexibility or choose one of our inclusive packages for convenience.

Cycling

Herefordshire offers a fantastic range of cycling routes, highlighting the beautiful city of Hereford, charming villages, and the stunning Wye Valley. We welcome cycling groups of all sizes and are ready to serve you, whether for a snack, meal, or overnight adventure. For larger groups, a quick call to pre-order food ensures a smooth experience.

Canoeing

The River Wye offers a magical canoeing experience with its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, including herons, kingfishers, and otters. Canoes can be rented from friendly operators in Glasbury and Hay-on-Wye, ideal for short trips or full-day adventures. You can paddle downstream to Bredwardine, where the hire company will collect your canoe.
