At The Moccas Fishery, we provide access to approximately eight miles of the River Wye, located in Bredwardine between Hay-on-Wye and Hereford.
This central stretch of the Wye is widely recognised as one of the UK’s premier salmon rivers, celebrated for its exceptional early “springers” and consistent fishing opportunities throughout the season. Its mid-river location offers a diverse range of water types, including fast gravel runs, deep pools, slower glides over red bedrock, underwater ledges, and dark holding pools where powerful Wye salmon often rest. Early-season fish are known for their remarkable size and strength, typically weighing 15 to 20 pounds, and the fishery has produced rare specimens weighing 30 to 45 pounds over the years. As late spring, summer, and autumn approach, the main runs of salmon and grilse pass through, generally weighing between 5 and 15 pounds, providing consistent and exciting fishing opportunities throughout the entire stretch. |

The Wye and Usk Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to improving the ecology, water quality and fisheries of the Rivers Wye and Usk. Its core aims focus on conserving, protecting, and restoring salmon and other native wildlife across rivers, their tributaries, and surrounding catchments. The charity also works to educate the public on the importance of healthy river systems and the need to safeguard and enhance these vital environments for future generations.

Rob was a long‑standing guest of the hotel, and we’re proud to display many of his exceptional artworks throughout the building. He spent years travelling the country with his fishing rod, sketchbook and camera, often settling on the banks of the Wye to capture its wildlife and character.
His illustrations featured in Trout & Salmon magazine, numerous books, the BBC’s Tales from the River Bank, and John Bailey’s award‑winning Trout at Ten Thousand Feet. His legacy lives on through his remarkable work, some of which you can view throughout the hotel. |
